Reading & Phonics
At Allesley Hall we aim to not only teach our children to read, but to develop a love of reading and books that will remain with our children for the rest of their lives.
Children learn to read using a variety of high quality materials chosen specifically for their individual needs. We use the Oxford Reading Tree reading schemes as well as the Floppy's Phonics synthetic phonics reading materials. Phonics is taught daily in Foundation and Key Stage 1 following Floppy's Phonics which is one of the DfEs validated systematic synthetic phonics schemes.
Our Reading curriculum is designed to build year on year to end of Key Stage outcomes in line with the National Curriculum. In the early stages we form firm foundations through a rigorous and systematic synthetic phonics approach. We use a Letters and Sounds based programme, Floppy's Phonics throughout Reception, Year 1 and into Year 2 where support is needed to catch up. Our aim is for children to become confident readers by the end of Key Stage 1, allowing children to develop their fluency, stamina and comprehension as they move through the school.
From Year 2 to Year 6, this is embedded within a sequence of learning for comprehension which has at its core vocabulary acquisition, inference and deduction and fluency. Three sessions across the week follow a structure of ‘Explore, Discuss and Understand’ allowing children the ability to revisit and review vocabulary, build on knowledge and understanding of different text types and apply comprehension skills to a wide variety of high quality, challenging texts. In addition, children read termly extended texts together as their ‘novel study’. These books often link with wider curriculum learning and inspire a variety of drama and writing experiences.
Children at AHPS are encouraged to read daily, initially through reading books that are carefully matched to their phonics phase, progressing through a spine of Oxford Reading Tree and Project X until they become ‘free readers’. All classrooms have class reading areas with subject specific books and other age-appropriate reading for pleasure books. Children frequently visit our school library and the local library and reading events are held regularly throughout the school year to promote reading enjoyment and support families. Children leave our school with a love of reading, a confidence around language and vocabulary and an ability to read widely and accurately across the whole curriculum.
Allesley Hall is proud of its well stocked library where all children can choose a book to take home. The library is a bright and inviting place and each class have weekly timetabled session to access this fabulous resource. We are also proud of our links with Allesley Park library and have enjoyed visits to storytelling sessions and theme based reading.

Phonics form the foundation of a child's ability to read. The following PowerPoints give families a modelled example of how phonemes are pronounced and a copy of the resources and flash cards used in school to directly support at home.

We use SeeSaw as an online learning platform. Teachers in Reception and Key Stage 1 upload modelled phonics sessions to support parents with consolidating phonics at home. They also read stories to the children via SeeSaw for use at home to inspire engage and develop a love of stories and reading with our families.
