Reading & Phonics
At Allesley Hall we aim to not only teach our children to read, but to develop a love of reading and books that will remain with our children for the rest of their lives.
Children learn to read using a variety of high quality materials chosen specifically for their individual needs. We use the Oxford Reading Tree reading schemes as well as the Floppy's Phonics synthetic phonics reading materials. Phonics is taught daily in Foundation and Key Stage 1 following the principles of Letters & Sounds.
Every child from Year 2 to Year 6 at Allesley Hall reads a high quality class novel each term thus guaranteeing that they read and experience a breadth of contemporary and classic children's literature as they progress through the school. This novel study helps them to acquire new vocabulary; improve their comprehension of texts and enables them to delve deeply into a book that they might not normally choose. This is a very successful part of our personalised English curriculum and 100% of the children questioned in recent pupil voice monitoring said they enjoyed their Novel Study work!
Learning doesn't stop once our children are fluent readers. Children's love of literature is continually nurtured through our whole school ethos and many school wide initiatives. These have included visits from local poets, well-loved authors and even the 2014 World Book Day illustrator. We hold an annual ‘Bring a book, Swap a book’ week, create exciting literary Street Art opportunities and celebrate reading throughout the year through challenges, publishing children’s work and rewarding success in reading.
Allesley Hall is proud of its well stocked library where all children can choose a book to take home. The library is a bright and inviting place and each class have weekly timetabled session to access this fabulous resource. We are also proud of our links with Allesley Park library and have enjoyed visits to storytelling sessions and theme based reading.
We actively promote reading for pleasure.
